Language skills: Bulgarian, German, Russian; basic knowledge of English and French Bulgaria – A Short IntroductionA new member of the European Union, Bulgaria is similar in size and population to Austria spanning approx. 111,000 square kilometres with a population of roughly eight million, including sizeable Turkish and Roma minorities. Since 1991, Bulgaria has been a parliamentary republic. Well-known is the booming region along the Black Sea coast with its shallow sandy beaches; but there are also a vast number of mountains, rivers and lakes, a picturesque and multifaceted natural environment, a millennium-old culture and numerous sights. Bulgaria’s delicious cuisine, a special style of yoghurt, exquisite cheese and Kaskaval made from cow and sheep milk, the famous Schopska salad, grape schnapps as well as renowned wines are among Bulgaria’s trademarks. Great emphasis lies on gender equality and the excellent educational system. Bulgaria’s economy and tourist industry have been booming for years, only partly due to Bulgaria’s accession to the European Union. At present, the wage level is still relatively low and for that reason many Bulgarians choose to work abroad. Bulgaria is a very beautiful country, its inhabitants amiable and even-tempered. Bulgaria is also known for its hospitality, and tourists are very welcome. For more information on Bulgaria, please check out the new Baedeker or other travel guides. Nina Petkova-Bammer is also glad to forward any relevant information on her country and is happy to help organize travels to Bulgaria.
